Dr. Michelle K. Bacchiocchi is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Andrews University, where she also serves as the Director of Student Teaching. In this dual role, she places and supervises teacher candidates in classroom internships while modeling best classroom practices in method classes, First Days of School Experience, and Student Seminar to prepare future educators.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Educational Psychology from Andrews University (2020)
- MAT in Education from Andrews University
- MS in Medical Lab Science from Andrews University
- BS in Medical Lab Science from Andrews University
- BS in Science from Andrews University
Dr. Bacchiocchi's research focuses on educational psychology, particularly growth mindset and the definitions of intelligence among preservice teachers. Her work also explores teacher training, effective classroom strategies, motivation, and neural retraining. With a background in biology and medical lab science, she brings an interdisciplinary perspective to education research, having previously taught Introduction to Biology and Bacteriology at Lake Michigan College as an adjunct professor, and elementary and middle school at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on virtual teaching rehearsals, repeated teaching simulations, and their impact on preservice teacher efficacy. She has investigated the relationship between preservice teachers' implicit beliefs about intelligence and how they define intelligence, as well as using online education to address challenges in small, multigrade schools. Her work bridges educational theory with practical classroom applications.
Dr. Bacchiocchi's research contributions include:
- Repeating Teaching Experiences using Virtual Classrooms for Preservice Teachers (2022)
- The Relationship Between Preservice Teacher's Implicit Beliefs of Intelligence and How They Define Intelligence (2022)
- Using Online Education to Address the Challenges of Small, Multigrade Schools (2022)
- Virtual Teaching Rehearsals and Repeated Teaching Simulations: Impact on Pre-Service Teachers Efficacy (2022)
- Virtual Teaching Rehearsals and Repeated Teaching Simulations: Impact on Pre-Service Teachers Efficacy with High-Leverage Practices (2021)
As Director of Student Teaching, Dr. Bacchiocchi oversees the placement and supervision of teacher candidates in classroom settings. Her interdisciplinary background in both education and medical sciences informs her approach to teacher preparation and educational research. She is particularly interested in how growth mindset interventions can impact teacher development and classroom practices, connecting neurological understanding with educational applications.
