Michelle Anne Fitzmaurice

Dr Michelle Anne Fitzmaurice is a Research Fellow at the Microbiome Research Centre (MRC) within UNSW Medicine & Health, and a Research Ethics & Governance Officer at South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD). She integrates expertise in biomedical research, clinical trial operations, and ethics/governance frameworks to advance scientific discovery and research integrity.

Education:

• 2013 PhD in Biochemistry from Ulster University
• 2009 BSc (Hons) in Human Nutrition with Diploma in Industry

Research Interests focus on:

• Human Microbiome and microbial therapeutics
• Diabetes and metabolic health
• Infant and maternal nutrition & developmental programming
• Biomarker discovery and protein glycation
• Collaborative studies with Royal North Shore Hospital and Western Sydney University examining microbiome influences on breastfeeding pathologies and Australian quarantine policy impacts on infant feeding

Research Vision emphasizes bridging discovery with accountability. She leads the national Healthy Optimal Australian Microbiome (HOAM) study and contributes to the MothersBabies project, aiming to translate microbiome science into socially responsible diagnostics and therapeutics for metabolic diseases and maternal-infant health.
