Michelle A. Albert, MD, MPH, is a Professor in Residence and the Walter A. Haas-Lucie Stern Endowed Chair in Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. She serves as Admissions Dean for UCSF Medical School and Director of the CeNter for the StUdy of AdveRsiTy and CardiovascUlaR DiseasE (NURTURE Center). Her clinical expertise spans critical care cardiology and preventive cardiology, with a focus on health equity and the intersection of social determinants of health with cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Dr. Albert holds degrees from Haverford College (BA), the University of Rochester School of Medicine (MD), and Harvard School of Public Health (MPH). She completed residency and fellowship training at Columbia University Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Her research explores how adversity, stress, and structural inequities impact CVD risk, particularly among women and underrepresented populations. Key areas include cumulative toxic stress, implementation science for CVD prevention, and dismantling structural racism in healthcare. She has received NIH R01 funding, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grants, and the prestigious 2018 AHA Merit Award.
Dr. Albert’s leadership roles include Immediate-Past President of the American Heart Association (2022–2023), first Black woman to lead AHA, and Past President of the Association of Black Cardiologists and Association of University Cardiologists. She sits on the CDC’s Advisory Committee and federal NHLBI Board of External Experts.
Her awards include the 2024 ACC Distinguished Scientist Award, 2023 AHA Epidemiology Achievement Award, and 2023 Forbes 50 Over 50 Impact List. She has also been recognized for mentoring, including the 2016 AHA Women in Cardiology Award.
Dr. Albert advocates for policy changes addressing systemic racism in medicine and healthcare. Her work bridges clinical practice, research, and community engagement to advance health equity globally.
