Michele Reid-Vazquez is the E. Frederic Morrow Associate Professor of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies and Africana Studies at Bowdoin College, currently on leave for the 2024–2025 academic year. She holds an endowed chair in Race, Racism, and Racial Justice. Her work focuses on 19th-century Caribbean slavery, Afro-Latin American freedom struggles, U.S. Afro-Latinx civil rights, and digital humanities. She directs the Afrolatinidad Studies Institute, fostering transnational research and education. Notable publications include The Year of the Lash (2011) and her forthcoming Black Mobilities in the Age of Revolution.
Her research has been supported by major grants from the NEH, Fulbright Commission, and Schomburg Center. She hosts the Dialogues in Afrolatinidad podcast and has received awards such as the 2023 Martin Luther King, Jr. Just Community Award. Her interdisciplinary projects bridge historical scholarship with public humanities, emphasizing marginalized voices in the African Diaspora.
