Professor Michele J Burman is a leading academic in criminology at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the School of Social and Political Sciences and the Department of Sociological & Cultural Studies. She holds the rank of Professor of Criminology and has served as Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences (2015–2019) and Co-Director of the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR, 2006–2016). Her work focuses on feminist criminology, gender-based violence, and criminal justice responses to rape, domestic abuse, and stalking.
Key roles include Co-Editor-in-Chief of Criminology and Criminal Justice (2015–2020), Governance Board member of the Scottish Institute of Policing Research, and Director of the Women’s Support Project in Glasgow. She has advised policymakers and led over 30 research projects funded by prestigious bodies like the ESRC, EU Horizon 2020, and the Scottish Government.
Research interests span sentencing policies, vicarious traumatisation in professionals, and the impact of pandemic lockdowns on vulnerable groups. Her recent projects include evaluating prison reforms for women (SPAROW) and exploring survivor perspectives on sentencing for sexual offenses.
Awarded a CBE (2019), FRSE, and FAcSS, she has mentored numerous PhD students, with past advisees focusing on topics like youth justice, domestic abuse, and prison reform. Her work bridges academia and practice, emphasizing collaboration with NGOs and criminal justice agencies.
