Michel Boivin is a Professor of Psychology at Laval University, holding the Canada Research Chair in Child Development. He serves as Director of the Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment (GRIP) and leads the Strategic Knowledge Cluster on Early Child Development (SRC-ECD), a pan-Canadian consortium dedicated to knowledge mobilization in early childhood. His work is integral to the Early Childhood Interventions (ECI) network.
Boivin completed his Ph.D. in Psychology followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Denver and the University of Colorado Boulder, establishing a strong foundation for his research career.
His research program examines the biological, psychological, and social factors in child development through large-scale longitudinal studies such as the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development and the Quebec Newborn Twin Study. He investigates how genetic and environmental influences shape social behaviors, stress responses, school readiness, parent-child interactions, and peer relations. This work, supported by over $14 million in funding, has produced more than 200 publications in leading journals across psychology, psychiatry, and pediatrics.
Boivin's scientific recognition includes being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, holding the prestigious Canada Research Chair, and receiving a CIHR Senior Fellowship (2000-2005). He also presided over a Royal Society of Canada expert panel on early childhood development.
As a leader in his field, Boivin directs GRIP and the SRC-ECD, which are instrumental in advancing research and knowledge translation on early child development. His editorial role for the Encyclopaedia on Early Childhood Development further extends his impact.
