Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciencesمعرفی
Prof. Michał Wszoła, MD, PhD, DSc, is a Polish transplant surgeon, gastroenterologist, and scientist holding the academic rank of Professor of Medical Sciences (2023). He is affiliated with the Medical University of Warsaw, Department and Clinic of General and Transplant Surgery, and serves as Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Foundation for Research and Development of Science, CEO of Polbionica Sp. z o.o., and Medical Director of Medispace Sp. z o.o.
Education
- MD – Medical University of Warsaw
- PhD (2005) – Medical Sciences, dissertation on chronic Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in dialysis patients awaiting kidney transplantation
- Habilitation (2015) – Medical Sciences, scientific achievement on factors influencing kidney-transplant outcomes
- Professor of Medical Sciences (2023) – awarded by the President of Poland
Research Interests
Prof. Wszoła’s work integrates clinical transplant surgery with cutting-edge bioengineering. He pioneered endoscopic pancreatic-islet transplantation under the gastric submucosa (first-in-human 2013) and is spearheading the development of a 3-D bioprinted bionic pancreas through the multi-institutional Bionic Consortium. Additional foci include kidney-pancreas procurement and preservation via machine perfusion, decellularized extracellular-matrix bioinks, and stem-cell-based pancreatic tissue engineering.
Recent Publication Trends
His 2020-2023 publications emphasize bioprinting vascularized pancreatic constructs, optimizing decellularization protocols, evaluating murine diabetes models, and translating these innovations toward clinical therapy for type 1 diabetes. The work bridges in-vitro mechanistic studies with in-vivo pre-clinical validation.
