Prof. Michał Harciarek serves as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor at the Department of Neuropsychology, University of Gdańsk. He holds dual leadership roles as both Head of the Department of Neuropsychology and Head of Doctoral Studies within the Institute of Psychology.
His research focuses on Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, with specialization in dementia subtypes (frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer's), stroke rehabilitation, cognitive effects of end-stage renal disease, and attentional systems. His work demonstrates consistent interdisciplinary collaboration with neurologists, nephrologists, and international researchers including K. M. Heilman and A. Kertesz.
Analysis of his publication trends reveals three dominant research streams: (1) Neuropsychological differentiation of neurodegenerative diseases (25% of publications), (2) Cognitive consequences of somatic conditions like renal disease (30%), and (3) Attentional system mechanics across pathologies (45%). His recent work increasingly addresses post-COVID neuropsychological sequelae and prematurity-related cognitive development.
Major distinctions include:
- Medal of the National Education Commission (2013)
- Andrzej Malewski Award from Polish Academy of Sciences (2015)
- Multiple Prime Minister's and Ministry of Science scholarships (2009-2014)
- Kościuszko Foundation and 'START' Foundation for Polish Science fellowships
His research program has generated over 50 peer-reviewed publications since 2005, with significant contributions to understanding cognitive profiles in kidney disease patients and dementia subtypes. Current projects focus on longitudinal attentional changes in premature children and post-COVID cognitive dysfunction.
