Michal Conford is an Associate Professor at the School of Image Arts, Toronto Metropolitan University, currently on leave for the Winter Term 2025. He holds an M.J. in Documentary Filmmaking from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. (High Honours, magna cum laude) from Brandeis University.
His career spans film, opera, and journalism. Notable works include award-winning documentaries River People and Not On Any Map, screenplays for Ice Planet and Yasmine, and the opera libretto Nyx. He has contributed to CNN Middle East, New York Times Television, and the San Jose Mercury. Recent projects include the VR film Fragments of Jerusalem and the screenplay Brother True.
Research interests focus on narrative direction, documentary storytelling, and immersive media. He has received grants from the MacArthur and Ford Foundations and awards such as the IDA's David Wolper Prize and the San Francisco Film Fest's Golden Gate Award.
Previously Director of the Film Program at the School of Image Arts, he currently teaches writing and directing. His work bridges traditional filmmaking with emerging technologies like VR, emphasizing interdisciplinary storytelling.
