Michaelle Biddle is a Permanent Fellow and Conservator at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, University of Hamburg. She specializes in conservation of sub-Saharan African manuscripts, material cultural analysis of West African bookmaking, and Islamic manuscript preservation.
Her research examines historical paper production, watermarks, inks and pigments in manuscripts. She has established conservation laboratories in Nigeria and conducted training workshops worldwide. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals regarding cultural heritage preservation.
Biddle has led preservation projects for endangered manuscript collections in Northern Nigeria, Mali, Nepal and Vietnam, supported by grants from US State Department, Ford Foundation, and Gerda Henkel Stiftung.
