Michaela Mross is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University's School of Humanities and Sciences. Specializing in Japanese Buddhism, her research focuses on Sōtō Zen traditions, Buddhist rituals, sacred music, and manuscript/print culture in premodern Japan.
- PhD, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (2014)
- MA, University of Hamburg (2007)
- BM, Berklee College of Music (2000)
Her scholarly work explores the intersection of music and religious practice, particularly through kōshiki (Buddhist ceremonials). This includes co-editing a special issue of the Japanese Journal of Religious Studies on kōshiki and authoring the 2022 monograph Memory, Music, Manuscripts in the Kuroda Series. Current projects examine eisanka (Buddhist hymns) and lay Buddhist choirs' role in Zen modernization over the past seventy years.
Publications demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach combining religious studies with musicology and textual analysis. She can be contacted at mmross@stanford.edu or by phone at 650.723.0469. Office hours are held at Building 70, Room 71C.
