Dr. Michaela Kiernan is a Senior Research Scholar in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University's School of Medicine, affiliated with the Stanford Prevention Research Center and the Stanford Cancer Institute. Her roles include directing the R01 Countdown Program, which has raised over $173M in NIH grants, and advising on postdoctoral mentoring and clinical trial design. She holds a PhD in Health/Social Psychology from Yale University (1993) and a BA in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis (1987).
Her research focuses on methodological innovations for clinical trials, including retention strategies, motivational interviewing, and digital health tools. Key areas include weight management, behavioral interventions, and self-regulation in health behaviors. She has led trials like the Stanford Healthy Heart Study and Behavioral Strategies for Weight Management, emphasizing long-term adherence and participant engagement.
Dr. Kiernan's awards include the Excellence in Postdoctoral Mentoring Award (2009) and multiple Divisional Teaching Awards.
