Michael Zhang is an Associate Professor at the Department of Finance, Information Systems and Management Science, Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary's University. He served as Acting Associate Dean (Research & Knowledge Mobilization) from 2019–2020. His research focuses on data analytics applications in healthcare services and supply chain management, including projects funded by SSHRC and NFRFE grants totaling CAD 319,000. He teaches courses in Applied Data Analysis, Statistics, Operations Management, and Quantitative Methods across PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate programs.
Dr. Zhang holds a PhD in Management Science from the Ivey Business School (University of Western Ontario), a Master of Economics (Financial Engineering) from Xiamen University, and a BSc in Electronic Engineering from Zhejiang University. His current research includes machine learning for mental health interventions and vaccination strategy optimization. Notable projects include a CAD 273,000 NFRFE grant on mental health support for youth and a CAD 46,000 SSHRC grant on vaccination strategies using analytics.
His scholarly contributions span machine learning ethics in healthcare, supply chain optimization, and regulatory studies in digital banking. He has published on topics ranging from production lot-sizing algorithms to cross-cultural student retention during the pandemic. His work bridges operational efficiency and societal challenges, employing advanced analytical methods to address real-world problems in healthcare and business systems.
