Michael Wyrwich serves as an Associate Professor at the School of Economics and Business, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, with his office located at Carl-Zeiss-Str. 3, Room 5.17, 5th floor, 07743 Jena. His research centers on historical economic development with specific expertise in East German economic structures.
His primary research focus examines modernization blockades in the economy and science of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), conducting comparative analyses between East and West Germany as well as neighboring East-Central European nations. This work explores institutional constraints and their long-term socioeconomic consequences in transition economies.
Currently leading the BMBF-funded project "Mod-Block-DDR" (Modernisierungsblockaden in Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft der DDR), he investigates the emergence and consequences of economic and scientific modernization barriers in the GDR through systematic cross-regional comparisons.
Dr. Wyrwich's research activities include significant grant leadership through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), focusing on historical institutional analysis and comparative economic development studies. His work contributes critical insights into the persistence of economic structures in post-socialist transitions.
