Michael Vernon is a Ph.D. Researcher at the UWA Medical School and the UWA Centre for Child Health Research (affiliated with The Kids Research Institute Australia), based at T3mPLATE in the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. His work focuses on biomimetic design of heart valve scaffolds using melt electrowriting technology.
His research spans tissue engineering, biomimetics, and cardiovascular bioprinting, with emphasis on cardiac scaffold development, cardiomyocyte contractility control, and melt electrowriting applications. Key contributions include engineering interfacial regions, porosity optimization, and biomimetic microscale structures for cardiac tissue regeneration.
Recent publications reveal a concentrated trend in translating 3D bioprinting to cardiovascular solutions, particularly heart valve tissue engineering and patient-specific computational modeling. His work integrates materials science with clinical cardiology to address unmet needs in regenerative medicine and cardiovascular prosthetics.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Vice Chancellor's Award in Research Impact and Innovation (2023)
Vernon actively collaborates within the T3mPLATE research facility at the Harry Perkins Institute, driving innovation in biomedical engineering with strong ties to clinical applications through the UWA Medical School and affiliated child health research centers.
