Dr. Michael Van Zyll de Jong is the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). He holds a PhD and specializes in applied ecology, focusing on interdisciplinary research to inform fisheries management and policy. His work spans recreational fisheries assessment, river restoration, and the impacts of forestry and climate change on aquatic ecosystems.
Research interests include inland fisheries ecology, river restoration, ecological policy, and climate change impacts on freshwater systems. Current projects involve collaborations with institutions like the University of Hull, Canadian Forest Service, and Memorial University. Recent studies address salmon population resilience, boreal forest freshwater vulnerabilities, and ecosystem service integration in watershed planning.
He teaches BIOL 3062: Case Studies in Applied Ecology. Notable awards include an Honorary Lecturer title from the University of Hull (2015). Dr. van Zyll de Jong advises graduate students in topics ranging from climate-informed fisheries management to sustainable forest practices in Tanzania and Myanmar. His research tools include a planning and analysis framework for river restoration.
