Michael Thumm is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, holding a C3 professorship since 2003. He is based at the University Medical Center Göttingen within the Department of Cellular Biochemistry. His editorial roles include Associate Editor of AUTOPHAGY since 2004, former Editor of the Biochemical Journal (2004-2007), and Editorial Board Member of FEMS Yeast Research (2000-2011).
Thumm received his Dr. rer.nat. from the University of Stuttgart in 1987 under Prof. Dr. G. Pfleiderer and completed his Habilitation at the Institute of Biochemistry (University of Stuttgart) in 1997 under Prof. Dr. D.H. Wolf. His research focuses on molecular autophagy mechanisms using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with seminal contributions to PROPPIN protein functions (Atg18/Atg21/Hsv2), Atg8 lipidation, nucleophagy, and vacuolar degradation pathways. His work bridges fundamental yeast genetics with implications for human diseases including neurodegeneration and cancer.
Analysis of his 2015-2024 publications reveals dual emphases: (1) developing standardized methodologies through consensus guidelines (e.g., the 4th edition of autophagy assay guidelines in 2021), and (2) expanding understanding of specialized autophagy forms including ferroptosis-dependent autophagy, nucleophagy, and myelinophagy. His research demonstrates consistent translational progression from yeast models to mammalian systems, with increasing focus on disease mechanisms and therapeutic applications.
