Michael T. Ullman is a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Georgetown University School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in Neurology, Psychology, and Linguistics. He directs the Brain and Language Laboratory (brainlang.georgetown.edu), which investigates how the brain supports language, math, music, and reading through behavioral, electrophysiological (EEG/ERP), neuroimaging (fMRI), and meta-analytic techniques.
- Education: BA in Computer Science from Harvard University; PhD in Neuroscience from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His research focuses on the neural bases of language, particularly the interaction between declarative and procedural memory systems in typical and disordered populations (e.g., dyslexia, autism, Alzheimer’s). Recent work examines lexical-grammatical interactions in language disorders and memory-based enhancements for bilingual learning.
Google Scholar articles from 2012-2025 span neurocognitive studies on developmental language disorders, memory systems, bilingualism, and aging. Findings emphasize declarative memory compensation in disorders and age-related cognitive changes.
The Brain and Language Lab also explores group differences (e.g., sex, handedness) and employs meta-analytic approaches to uncover consistent abnormalities in conditions like Specific Language Impairment.
