MAJ Michael T. Baker serves as an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy (West Point) and as a Research Analyst in the Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis (OEMA), joining the faculty in fall 2021.
His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame (2022) and a B.S. in Economics from the United States Military Academy. Military training encompasses Ranger School, Airborne School, Armor Officer Basic Course, and Cavalry Leader’s Course following eight years of active service.
Research focuses on applied economics for military personnel systems, specifically supporting Army marketing and recruiting through data analysis in the Army Marketing Research Cell. Key interests include labor economics of recruitment, public sector resource allocation, and military manpower modeling within constrained fiscal environments.
His operational experience includes deployments to Afghanistan (2011), Kuwait (2013), and South Korea (2016-17) with the 4th and 1st Infantry Divisions, holding roles from Scout Platoon Leader to Squadron Logistics Officer. Family details note four children with his wife Heather.
