Michael Sundström is a Senior Lab Manager at the Department of Medicine, Solna, Karolinska Institutet, leading the SGC Karolinska laboratory. His research focuses on drug discovery for chronic inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and liver fibrosis through open science initiatives. The lab is based at the Centre for Molecular Medicine (CMM) and collaborates with institutions like SciLifeLab and EUbOPEN partners.
His work spans patient-derived cell assays, recombinant protein production, and chemogenomic tool compound validation. Key collaborations include Evert Homan (KU) in chemogenomics and international academic-industry networks.
The EUbOPEN project (IMI funding) provides SEK 690 million to develop drug-like chemical substances and antibodies for diseases like inflammation and cancer. Research outputs are publicly available to accelerate medicines development.
Notable scientific activities include:
- Co-developing PSW-Designer (2023) for photopharmacological ligands
- Structural analysis of TRPV3 ion channel (2013)
- Protein-protein interaction studies (2006)
He contributes to strategic frameworks like the Target 2035 initiative for comprehensive chemical probe coverage of human proteins.
