Michael Stephens is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Lenoir-Rhyne University, joining in Fall 2023. His academic work focuses on political economy, global inequality, cultural studies, and the historical development of gendered and racialized labor formations, with a regional emphasis on the Caribbean and Atlantic World.
Education:
- Ph.D., M.A. in Sociology, Binghamton University
- M.A. in Public and International Affairs, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
- B.A. in International Affairs, James Madison University
Stephens’ research investigates the social consequences of development projects on vulnerable populations in Latin America, particularly queer and trans workers in Colombia’s tourism industry, and compares militarized policing in Brazil and Colombia. His work bridges historical sociology with contemporary issues of labor, race, gender, and sexuality.
Scientific Awards:
- 2023 Albert Szymanski – T.R. Young Award, American Sociological Association
- Fulbright Award recipient for research in Colombia
He has taught courses on global inequality, structural inequalities, and innovative classes like “Capitalism and Comics” using graphic novels. Stephens also serves as Faculty Advisor for the LRU Student Pride Club and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights and harm reduction in public health, particularly addressing opioid crisis-related inequalities.
