Michael Spertus is a Senior Principal Engineer at Amazon in the Development Tools group and a Full Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. His expertise spans cybersecurity, programming languages, and software performance optimization. He has held leadership roles at major tech firms including Symantec, where he developed critical cybersecurity technologies, and founded Geodesic Systems, a self-healing software startup.
Research interests include cybersecurity frameworks, C++ standards development, and software reliability. His work on the Symantec Authoritative Data Lake contributed to detecting the Russian Dragonfly attack on the US energy grid. He has also pioneered self-optimizing software tools like Great Circle, which improved program performance and reliability.
Awardees include Software Development Magazine’s Product of the Year (Libraries/Components category) and Best Poster at CPPCon 2017. He is an ANSI/ISO C++ Standards Committee member with over 50 proposals and a frequent keynote speaker at industry and academic events.
Previously, he served as Chief Technologist at VERITAS’ Application Performance Management division and led Geodesic Systems before its acquisition. He holds a long-standing role on the board of directors at the Spertus Institute.
