Michael Serazio is a Professor in the Department of Communication at Boston College. His research focuses on media production, advertising, popular culture, political communication, and new media. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Communication from the University of San Francisco. Serazio is the author of three books, including The Authenticity Industries: Keeping It 'Real' in Media, Culture, and Politics (2023), which examines how authenticity is constructed in media and politics. He has received accolades such as the NCA Gerald R. Miller Award for his dissertation and the Boston College “Teacher of the Year” award.
His work spans academic journals like Journal of Communication and Media, Culture & Society, as well as popular outlets like The New York Times and Vox. Serazio teaches courses on media theory, sports culture, and anti-social media. He hosts the podcast Formative: Conversations on Who We Became and serves on Boston College’s Journalism program steering committee. His research explores intersections of media, politics, and commerce, with a focus on authenticity’s role in shaping public discourse.
