Michael Schubert

Dr. Michael Schubert is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Geophysics and Geology, Leipzig University, and a senior scientist and project leader at the Department of Catchment Hydrology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig. His expertise lies at the intersection of hydrogeology, environmental radioactivity, and tracer hydrology, with over two decades of research experience focused on using natural and anthropogenic radionuclides as environmental tracers.

Dr. Schubert's research interests center on the application of radionuclides as environmental tracers, particularly focusing on radon (222Rn), radium isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra, 228Ra), and radioactive sulfur (35S). His work spans groundwater dating, river-groundwater interactions, submarine groundwater discharge, and the investigation of environmentally relevant processes using natural decay chains. He has developed innovative field approaches for on-site detection of radon concentrations and methods for assessing groundwater with elevated natural activity concentrations.

His publication record demonstrates consistent productivity with research spanning hydrogeological investigations, analytical method development, and environmental applications of radionuclide tracers. Dr. Schubert's work shows strong international collaboration, particularly with researchers in coastal hydrology and groundwater studies across Europe and beyond.

Dr. Schubert has received recognition through his habilitation degree in 2006 with the thesis 'Radon in Soil Gas and Groundwater as Natural Tracer in Environmental Geology' and maintains active research leadership as head of the laboratory for Environmental Radioactivity at UFZ.

His academic journey began with a Diplom-Mineralogist (MSc equivalent) from University Göttingen, followed by doctoral studies at UFZ, and culminated in his habilitation in 2006. Prior to his academic career, he gained practical experience as an environmental scientist in various consulting positions in Germany and the UK.
