Michael Schmidt is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Memphis, serving as Associate Dean of Research and Community Engagement and Director of the Institute for Arts and Health within the College of Communication and Fine Arts. He holds a PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Memphis School of Public Health (2019), an MGD from NC State University (1994), and a BFA from Ohio University (1992). His academic career spans roles including Director of the Center for Multimedia Arts (2003–2014) and Affiliate Faculty in Public Health.
His research focuses on design-driven solutions for public health challenges, particularly child health and rights, opioid use disorder, and tobacco control. Notable projects include the SHELBY Child Impact Assessment tool, waterpipe health warning labels, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) studies. He has received awards for engaged scholarship and design excellence, including the Alumni Association Award (2008) and multiple NIH grants.
His teaching spans graphic design theory, typography, and user-centered design. He advises over 30 graduate students, with expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration. Current grants include NIH-funded work on ENDS health warnings and CDC initiatives for mental health promotion. He actively presents at conferences on topics like health communication and design ethics.
