Michael Scheurer

Dr. Michael Scheurer is a Professor of Pediatrics (Hematology-Oncology) at Baylor College of Medicine and holds adjunct roles at the University of Texas School of Public Health. He serves as Director of the Population Sciences Biorepository, Associate Director for Inclusive Leadership and Culture at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Director of the Center for Epidemiology & Population Health. His research focuses on molecular epidemiology, particularly viruses, environmental factors, and immune function as cancer risk factors. He co-leads international consortia studying rare tumors like childhood leukemia and brain tumors. Dr. Scheurer’s work also addresses cancer health disparities, aiming to reduce inequities through interventions. He holds the Sidney L. and Donald F. Faust Chair in Pediatric Cancer Epidemiology.

Research Interests: Dr. Scheurer investigates environmental and genetic risk factors for pediatric cancers, including exposure to toxicants, immune dysfunction, and disparities in cancer outcomes. His lab develops molecular markers to identify cancer risks and adverse treatment effects. Recent work explores the role of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) in cancer and the impact of environmental exposures like PM2.5 on pediatric cancer incidence.

Grants & Leadership: Directs research cores at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, overseeing biorepository operations and translational research initiatives. His leadership in inclusive leadership and culture reflects a commitment to equity in cancer research and care.

Labs/Teams: Oversees the Population Sciences Biorepository and collaborates with the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium (CLIC) and Brain Tumor Epidemiology Consortium (BTEC). His work integrates molecular, epidemiological, and clinical data to advance precision medicine and health equity.
