Dr. Michael Scanlan is a Lecturer in Political & International Studies at the University of Glasgow's School of Social and Political Sciences. He joined the institution in 2021 and earned his PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2022. Prior to academia, he worked in public relations and public affairs, including roles in the European Parliament.
His research focuses on Populism, Identity, Nationalism, Radical politics, Comparative politics, and the Pedagogy of contentious subjects. He is actively involved in teaching at both pre-honours and honours levels, co-convening courses such as Politics 1A: Introduction to Politics and Comparative Perspectives on Populism.
Scanlan is committed to public engagement, particularly in encouraging younger students from deprived areas to pursue political studies. He regularly visits schools across Central Scotland to engage Higher Politics and Modern Studies students. His teaching also includes the widening participation summer school and modules like Qualitative Methods in the Social Sciences.
He is affiliated with the Politics Teaching research group and emphasizes fostering a lifelong love for political study among students through accessible pedagogy.
