Michael Sattler is a Professor of Biomolecular NMR-Spectroscopy at the Technical University of Munich and Director of the Institute of Structural Biology at Helmholtz Zentrum München. He also serves as Director of the Bavarian NMR Center (BNMRZ). His research focuses on integrated structural biology of protein complexes, RNA-based gene regulation, peroxisomal biogenesis, disease mechanisms, and structure-based drug design.
His educational background includes:
- Doctoral research (1991-1995) at the University of Frankfurt, Germany, under Prof. Dr. Christian Griesinger, focusing on "Development and implementation of novel multidimensional heteronuclear NMR methods with improved sensitivity for biomacromolecules"
- Postdoctoral Associate (1995-1997) at Abbott Laboratories, USA, working with Dr. Stephen W. Fesik on structural biology of protein complexes in signaling and apoptosis
Professor Sattler's research spans multiple areas of structural biology with a particular emphasis on RNA-protein interactions and their role in gene regulation. His work integrates multiple structural techniques including NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, SAXS, SANS, and cryo-EM to study conformational dynamics of biomolecules. He has made significant contributions to understanding alternative splicing mechanisms, protein-RNA interactions, molecular chaperones (particularly Hsp90), and peroxisome biogenesis. His research has important implications for structure-based drug discovery, especially for targeting protein-protein interactions and RNA-based regulatory mechanisms.
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate continued leadership in structural biology with a growing emphasis on phase separation phenomena, RNA recognition codes, and computational approaches to structural biology. His work spans diverse biological systems from viral mechanisms to plant cold adaptation, reflecting the versatility of structural approaches in modern biology. Key emerging themes include the role of intrinsically disordered regions in RNA binding, the structural basis of alternative splicing, and the application of machine learning to protein-ligand interactions for drug discovery.
Professor Sattler has served as a Group Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) from 1997-2006, where he focused on structural biology in RNA-based regulation of gene expression. Since 2007, he has led the Institute of Structural Biology at Helmholtz Zentrum München while holding his professorship at TUM. His laboratory employs integrated structural biology approaches to tackle complex biological questions, particularly those involving dynamic macromolecular assemblies that are challenging to study with single techniques.
