Michael Robbins is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Maine. He is a key collaborator in the long-running Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Study (MSLS), established in 1975 and relocated to the University of Maine in 1977. His research focuses on the biological, psychological, and social correlates of cognitive aging, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular risk factors and their interplay with cognitive performance across adulthood.
Dr. Robbins’ work leverages the MSLS’s extensive longitudinal and cross-sectional data, which includes variables such as blood pressure, diabetes indicators, mental health metrics (depression, anxiety), and neuropsychological testing. Collaborators span institutions like Boston University, the University of Virginia, Oxford University, and the Australian National University. The MSLS database supports research on aging, cognitive decline, and chronic disease progression, offering valuable insights into public health strategies.
His advising focus is currently paused for the Fall 2025 semester. Funding for MSLS has been secured through grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIH) and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NIH). His research team engages in interdisciplinary projects addressing aging-related health challenges, emphasizing translational outcomes for clinical and policy applications.
