Michael R. Willig is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut. He serves as Executive Director of the Institute of the Environment and Director of the Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering. His research focuses on social-ecological systems, disturbance ecology, and the impacts of landuse changes on biodiversity. Willig leads projects examining responses of social-ecological systems to environmental disturbances such as high-energy storms in Puerto Rico. His work bridges ecological and anthropogenic factors to understand biodiversity dynamics.
Research Interests:
- Social-ecological systems resilience
- Disturbance regimes and ecosystem recovery
- Landuse patterns and biodiversity conservation
- Human-environment interactions in tropical regions
He coordinates interdisciplinary initiatives through his roles in environmental institutes and centers at UConn, fostering collaboration between ecological science and policy.
