Michael R. Wasielewski is the Clare Hamilton Hall Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University and directs the Institute for Quantum Information Research and Engineering (INQUIRE) and the Center for Molecular Quantum Transduction (CMQT). He holds a B.S. (1971) and Ph.D. (1975) from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on light-driven processes in molecules, quantum information science, and ultrafast spectroscopy. He has authored over 750 publications and holds numerous honors, including National Academy of Sciences membership and the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award.
Research interests include molecular qubits, spin chemistry, singlet fission, and coherence in organic systems. His group develops optically addressable qubits, studies chirality-induced spin selectivity, and explores energy transfer mechanisms in donor-acceptor systems. Key tools include time-resolved EPR, two-dimensional spectroscopy, and femtosecond techniques.
- Director of two major research centers at Northwestern.
- Over 20 major awards, including Royal Society of Chemistry prizes and Humboldt Award.
- Ph.D. students include leaders in quantum sensing and molecular electronics.
Recent work emphasizes entanglement transduction between photons and electron spins, with breakthroughs in optically polarized qubits and long-lived spin states. The group collaborates across physics, materials science, and computer engineering disciplines.
