Michael R. Burchell II

Michael R. Burchell II is a Professor and Extension Leader in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from NC State (2003), an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Mississippi (1996), and a B.S. in Biology from NC State (1992).

• Research Focus: Water quality, wetland restoration, riparian buffers, constructed wetlands, urban stormwater, and agricultural water management.
• Academic Contributions: Developed undergraduate and graduate courses in Ecological Engineering and wetland design; led the creation of NC State's first undergraduate Ecological Engineering curriculum.
• Extension Leadership: Oversees a departmental workshop program training 3,000+ clients annually and leads the Extension Water Resources Program Team.

Professional Recognition: Served as President of the American Ecological Engineering Society (2021-2022). Affiliated with the Climate Solutions Collaborative and Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (CRSI).
