Michael Pfrender is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame and has served as the Director of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core Facility since 2009. He previously held positions at Utah State University as an Associate Professor (2001-2009) and Adjunct Professor (2007-2009). His academic journey includes a PhD in Biology from the University of Oregon (1998) and MS/BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Michigan (1992/1988).
- Director, Genomics & Bioinformatics Core Facility, Notre Dame (2009–present)
- Associate Chair, Department of Biological Sciences, Notre Dame (2020–present)
His research focuses on evolutionary and ecological genomics, particularly the molecular basis of adaptive traits and phenotypic plasticity. Key projects include studying the relationship between genetic diversity and ecosystem function, environmental stress responses in Daphnia, and the evolutionary dynamics of toxin resistance in predator-prey systems.
Recent publications highlight his work on environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding for biodiversity monitoring, gene expression networks in stress response, and genomic adaptations in aquatic and terrestrial organisms. His interdisciplinary approach bridges ecology, genetics, and computational biology to address 21st-century challenges in biodiversity preservation and ecosystem health.
