Michael Penn is the Teresa Hihn Moore Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in Classics. He is a Faculty Affiliate at the Taube Center for Jewish Studies. His research focuses on early Christianity, particularly Syriac Christian writings in the Middle East. Penn holds additional academic ties to institutions like Mount Holyoke College and Brandeis University, and has experience in secondary education and research roles at NASA and the Weizmann Institute.
His research specialties include digital humanities methodologies applied to ancient texts, gender studies, and the intersection of religion and sexuality. Current projects include The Church of Baghdad (NEH-funded) analyzing 8th-century Syriac manuscripts using social network analysis, and The Social Lives of Manuscripts, exploring material philology through case studies of stolen/forged texts.
Major awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and multiple NEH grants. Penn leads digital initiatives like the Digital Analysis of Syriac Handwriting (dash.stanford.edu) and a Syriac Verb Tutorial website. He currently supervises Ph.D. students in late antiquity studies, emphasizing diversity in the field through innovative approaches.
