Michael Peneder

Michael Peneder is a Senior Economist and Deputy Director at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO), responsible for scientific coordination. He leads research in industrial economics, innovation, competitiveness, and digitalization. Since 1992, he has been part of WIFO's 'Industrial, Innovation, and International Economics' group. He studied economics at the University of Vienna and Vienna University of Economics and Business, completing his habilitation in 2017.

Key achievements include coordinating EUKLEMS productivity accounts for Austria, leading the EU Commission's European competitiveness reports, and collaborating with the OECD on company-level productivity analyses. His research is published in international journals, and his co-authored book 'Schumpeter's Venture Money' won the ISS Prize in 2022.

He has held visiting roles at Harvard University, Stanford University, and Ritsumeikan University. Recent projects include the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Program (2024-26) and studies on the economic impact of Austria's surveying and measurement sector.
