Michael Patte is Professor of Early Childhood Education and Program Coordinator for the Child Life Specialist and Playwork Programs at Commonwealth University. He holds a PhD from Pennsylvania State University and serves as a visiting scholar in the Play, Education, Toys, and Language (PETaL) – Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree Program, which involves collaboration between the University of Cordoba (Spain), Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon (Portugal), and Marmara University (Turkey). Additionally, he is Co-Editor of The International Journal of Play.
Dr. Patte's research focuses on the critical role of play in children's development and education. His work examines how play can be integrated into standards-driven curricula while maintaining its therapeutic and developmental benefits. He investigates play environments across various contexts, including schools, hospitals, and adventure playgrounds, with particular attention to how societal factors impact children's opportunities for play. His scholarship bridges theoretical perspectives with practical applications, advocating for policies that protect and promote children's right to play across diverse settings.
His scholarly contributions reveal a consistent focus on play-based pedagogy across multiple contexts.
