Michael L. Overton is a Silver Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. His research focuses on numerical analysis, optimization, linear algebra, and mathematical programming. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University (1979) and has been a faculty member at NYU since then.
- Education: B.Sc. (Honors) in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia (1974), M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University (1977, 1979).
Research Interests: Overton's work centers on numerical algorithms, eigenvalue optimization, nonsmooth optimization, and semidefinite programming. He has contributed to software tools like HIFOO and GRANSO for optimization and control problems.
Awards: Fellow of SIAM and Fellow of the IMA.
