Michael Ortiz is an Adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University and holds a Bonn Research Chair at the University of Bonn. He is also an Emeritus Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he retired in 2020. His expertise spans computational mechanics, materials science, and solid mechanics. He earned a BS from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, followed by MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Polytechnic University of Madrid
- Master of Science and PhD in Civil Engineering, UC Berkeley
Ortiz’s research focuses on mechanics of materials, computational solid mechanics, and high-energy density dynamics. He directed Caltech’s DoE/PSAAP Center (2008–2013) and currently serves on editorial boards of journals like Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids and Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering.
- Awards/Honors:
- Recipient of the Timoshenko Medal (ASME, 2015), John von Neumann Medal (USACM, 2019), and multiple fellowships.
He has advised national laboratories (e.g., Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore) and contributed to panels like the DOE’s PSAAP Center. His interdisciplinary work bridges applied mathematics, computational methods, and materials science.
