Dr. Michael Nosonovsky is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM), affiliated with the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. He holds a PhD from Northeastern University (2001) and MS/BA degrees from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (1992). His research focuses on surface science, tribology, biomimetics, and self-organizing materials, with an emphasis on energy conservation, water-repellent surfaces, and bioinspired design.
His work bridges fundamental science and practical applications, such as self-cleaning solar panels, anti-fouling coatings, and novel materials for friction reduction. He has co-authored over 150 papers and books, including seminal works on omniphobic surfaces and tribology. Dr. Nosonovsky’s awards include the CEAS Excellence in Research Award (2013) and the ASME Burt L. Newkirk Award (2008) for nanotribology research.
Recent studies explore droplet clusters, triboinformatics (machine learning in tribology), and interdisciplinary topics like microbial survival in droplets and taste receptor analysis. He leads projects on self-healing composites, surface modification techniques, and the application of topological data analysis to material characterization.
