Dr. Michael Meyer is a PostDoc researcher at the Institute of Landscape Ecology at the University of Münster, Germany, working within the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research Group. He has been actively involved in numerous research projects since 2025, focusing on the effects of natural forest development on biodiversity in North Rhine-Westphalia's forest reserves, with particular emphasis on beetle fauna. His academic journey includes a PhD in Landscape Ecology from the University of Münster (2021), preceded by Master's and Bachelor's studies in Ecology at the University of Jena.
Dr. Meyer's research spans multiple ecological disciplines, with primary interests in:
- Land use impacts on ecosystems
- Soil ecology, particularly microbial biomass and nutrient availability
- Biodiversity research across different landscapes
- Functional traits of organisms within ecosystems
- Taxonomy and systematics of arthropods
His work investigates how land use and landscape structure affect animal communities and soil processes, with fieldwork conducted in grasslands, agricultural areas, and forests. Dr. Meyer has developed expertise in studying entire ecological communities, integrating both taxonomic relationships and functional traits of species, along with their interspecific interactions.
Dr. Meyer has received recognition for his academic contributions, including the Teaching Award of the Geoscience Department for outstanding engagement in teaching (2018) and the Young Community Ecologist Award (2nd place) at the 1st International Conference on Community Ecology (2017). He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Arachnological Society, the German Ecological Society (GfÖ), and the Northwest German Arachnological Working Group (NOWARA). He has also served on expert committees for forest biodiversity monitoring in North Rhine-Westphalia.
As an educator, Dr. Meyer has supervised numerous Bachelor's and Master's theses, covering diverse topics in ecology, biodiversity, and landscape management. His students have investigated subjects ranging from arthropod diversity in different forest types to soil microbial processes under varying management intensities. He has also led field trips and provided consultation hours for students on Tuesdays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Dr. Meyer is involved in several significant research projects, including BiCO2 (Biodiversity and carbon sequestration in forests with different use intensities), studies on insects in North Rhine-Westphalian forests, and long-term crop rotation experiments. His work often involves collaboration with various institutions, including the State Agency for Forest and Wood North Rhine-Westphalia, NABU Münsterland Nature Conservation Station, and the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change.
