Michael Marletta is the Class of 1936 Chair and Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a joint appointment as Professor of Chemistry and the C.H. and Annie Li Chair in Molecular Biology of Diseases. His research integrates chemistry and biology to study protein function and enzyme mechanisms, with a focus on nitric oxide (NO) signaling, gas sensing, and polysaccharide monooxygenases. Key projects include elucidating NO's role in vascular and nervous system signaling, H-NOX gas sensor proteins, and cellulose degradation via novel copper-dependent enzymes.
Research interests emphasize molecular mechanisms of enzyme function, ligand-receptor interactions, and biofuel production through enzymatic innovation. Recent work explores NO-dependent signaling in pathogens like Vibrio cholerae and structural studies of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) using cryo-EM. Awards include the Alfred Bader Award in Bioinorganic Chemistry (2015) for bridging chemistry and biology. The lab actively develops tools like H-NOX-based oxygen sensors and investigates PMO enzymes' roles in fungal pathogenesis and plant development.
