Michael Mann is an Associate Professor of Geography and Director of Graduate Studies at George Washington University, specializing in geospatial analysis, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. His research focuses on fire probability modeling, MERS-CoV ecology, and remote sensing applications. He holds a PhD and MA in Earth & Environment from Boston University and a BA in Economics from the College of Wooster.
Dr. Mann's work is supported by grants addressing climate change impacts, agricultural sustainability, and urban development. He teaches courses including GEOG 2137 (Environmental Hazards), GEOG 3106 (GIS), and GEOG 6293 (Programming for Geospatial Applications). As an affiliated faculty member of the Global Food Institute, he contributes to food security research.
His research integrates machine learning with geospatial data, producing influential studies on crop phenology monitoring, wildfire risk assessment, and poverty mapping using satellite imagery. He authored the open-access textbook PyGIS, a foundational resource for Python-based geospatial programming.
Mann's recent work explores the socioeconomic impacts of climate change through econometric analyses and community-engaged mapping initiatives. His interdisciplinary approach bridges physical geography, remote sensing technology, and policy applications in global development contexts.
