Mr Michael Lomotey (FRSA, MSc) is a PhD researcher and affiliate researcher at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and the Sustainability and Resilience Institute (SRI). His work bridges climate adaptation with Black life conditions, using frameworks from the Black Radical Tradition (BRT) and critical antiblackness analysis.
Research Focus: His research interrogates how historic dehumanization of Black communities underpins modern climate policy inequities, particularly through flood risk in Hull. He combines BRT, cultural studies, and lived experience to uncover systemic biases in climate discourse and advocate for emancipatory solutions. Key themes include:
- Antiblackness as a theoretical framework

- Black environmentalism
- Critical climate justice
- Disaster risk reduction
External Roles: He has presented at major conferences including AAG Annual Conference 2023, Climate Experts Panel at Africa Centre, and Focal Point 2023. His work emphasizes community co-creation of climate solutions with Black communities in the UK.

Prior Experience: Before academia, he worked on human rights impacts of international tourism and sustainability in clothing supply chains. His PhD is funded by the FELS Black Futures scholarship, combining activist-scholarship to address climate risks in Hull.
