Michael Lobel is a Professor of Art History at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY). He holds a BA in Studio Art from Wesleyan University and an MA and PhD in History of Art from Yale University.
His research focuses on American art, modern art, art criticism, and cultural history. He has explored topics such as art during the 1918 flu pandemic, Confederate monuments, the history of degenerate art, and the global turn in art criticism. His work engages with the oeuvre of artists like Romare Bearden, Robert Colescott, Rosalyn Drexler, Gordon Parks, Robert Rauschenberg, Laurie Simmons, Sturtevant, and Andy Warhol.
Professor Lobel’s scholarly contributions include books such as John Sloan: Drawing on Illustration and Van Gogh and the End of Nature (2024). He has also written extensively for publications like Artforum, Art in America, and Art Bulletin, addressing interdisciplinary themes at the intersection of art and historical events.
