Michael Leonard

Michael Leonard serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Art within the College of the Pacific at the University of the Pacific. As a medical and scientific visual storyteller, he creates educational illustrations for diverse audiences ranging from patients and laypersons to surgeons and researchers, frequently collaborating with surgical teams to ensure anatomical precision in depicting complex procedures and anatomical structures.

His research focuses on the historical continuum of medical illustration, drawing inspiration from pioneers like Leonardo da Vinci and Max Brödel. Leonard integrates traditional artistic techniques with emerging digital technologies to visualize medical concepts, emphasizing how visual communication enhances medical education and clinical understanding. His work bridges artistic tradition with contemporary medical visualization needs.

Leonard's publication record spans four decades and demonstrates consistent expertise in cardiovascular surgery, neuroanatomy, and surgical technique documentation. His illustrations predominantly serve pediatric cardiac surgery and complex congenital heart defect repairs, reflecting deep specialization in translating intricate surgical procedures into accessible visual formats for medical education.
