Michael L. James, MD, FAHA, is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery at Duke University School of Medicine. He serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Duke-NUS Research and is actively involved in clinical practice, research, and education at Duke University Hospital. His expertise spans neurocritical care, neuroanesthesia, and vascular neurology.

Dr. James leads translational research on mechanisms of neuroinflammation and neuroprotective therapies for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). He has developed a murine model of ICH to test novel therapeutics and reverse-translate findings to clinical trials, including NIH-funded studies like CLEAR-IVH and MISTIE.
His recent work focuses on:
- Biomarker analysis for brain injury severity
- Pharmacological interventions (CN-105, beta-blockers, dexmedetomidine)
- Temperature and hemodynamic management in neurocritical care
- Epidemiology of racial/ethnic disparities in ICH outcomes
He has served as Duke site-PI for NIH-funded clinical trials and contributed to over 169 academic articles. Awards include Fellow of the American Heart Association.
