Michael Kraft serves as Full Professor in KU Leuven's Department of Electrical Engineering, leading the Micro- and Nano-systems (MNS) research division. He also directs the Leuven Institute for Micro- and Nanoscale Integration (LIMNI) and holds a guest professorship at imec, leveraging 25+ years of expertise in micro/nanosystems for global challenges in sustainability, healthcare, and security.
Education:
- 1993: Dipl.-Ing. Univ. Electrical Engineering, Friedrich Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuernberg
- 1997: PhD, Coventry University (UK)
- 1998-1999: Postdoctoral Researcher, UC Berkeley
His research spans MEMS, bio/chemical sensors, physical microsensors, MEMS interface circuits, and atom/ion chips. He pioneers innovations in sensor precision, microfabrication, and quantum applications, translating theoretical concepts into devices addressing climate change and medical diagnostics through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Recent publications (2012-2020) reveal dominant trends in high-sensitivity accelerometers, piezoelectric ultrasound transducers, and microfluidic biosensors, with growing emphasis on quantum MEMS and advanced SOI fabrication techniques. Cross-cutting themes include noise reduction, energy efficiency, and multi-physical sensing integration.
Scientific Awards: None documented in source material.
Kraft oversees the Cleanroom and MEMS operations at Leuven Nanocentre, mentoring researchers in sensor design and fabrication while securing institutional support for nanofabrication infrastructure. His leadership in LIMNI drives strategic partnerships with imec and industry consortia.
