Michael Kolta is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University at Albany, State University of New York, within the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He combines expertise in music theory, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics to develop innovative computational tools, most notably a melody-based search engine patented in 2011.
- B.S. in Industrial Engineering (1998) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
- M.S. (2007) and Ph.D. (2009) in Computer Science from University at Albany
His research focuses on interdisciplinary applications of AI, particularly in music information retrieval systems. His patented melody-matching technology enables audio-based queries (humming/singing) for music search, integrating musical abstractions with machine learning. He authored the book Christian Ethics in Computers, Software, and Artificial Intelligence (2025).
Scientific awards include:
- 2011 Software patent for melody-based search engine
Outside academia, Kolta is a keyboard player and drummer, actively engages in family activities, and maintains fitness through weightlifting and outdoor sports.
