Michael Kohl

Dr. Michael Kohl is a Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience at the University of Glasgow's School of Psychology & Neuroscience, affiliated with the Centre for Neuroscience. He holds a B.Sc. in Neuroscience from University College London (2005) and a D.Phil. in Physiology from the University of Oxford (2009). His postdoctoral work spanned the University of Cambridge, Stanford University (2010-2011), and the University of California, Berkeley (2012-2013). He previously served as an Early Career Research Fellow (2013-2018) and University Research Lecturer (2018) at the University of Oxford before joining Glasgow in 2018.

His research focuses on neural integration between primary sensory cortices and higher-order regions like the retrosplenial cortex, using theoretical and experimental approaches. Key projects include studying inhibitory interneurons in somatosensory perception, hippocampal-retrosplenial interactions in associative memory, and developing neurotechnological tools for neural circuit analysis.

Notable contributions include pioneering work on optogenetic methods, multiplane imaging, and understanding lateralized hippocampal functions. His publications span high-impact journals like Cell Reports, Current Biology, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
