Michael J. Walsh is a Professor of Religion at Vassar College and directs the Asian Studies Program. He has been at Vassar since 2001, serving as Department Chair of Religion and Director of Asian Studies. His research focuses on China's socioreligious culture, Buddhist monasticism, and the intersection of religion with political structures. He has authored major works including Sacred Economies: Buddhist Monasticism and Territoriality in Medieval China (Columbia UP, 2008) and Stating the Sacred: Religion, China, and the Formation of the Nation-State (Columbia UP, 2016). Current projects include a book on alternative Chinese historiography and teaching materials about Buddhist monastic space.
Education: BSocSci from University of Cape Town, MA and PhD from University of California-Santa Barbara. He teaches courses on religious theories/methods, China's cultural history, and monasticism. Active in college governance, he has served on FASC committee and the President's cabinet.
Labs/Teams: Leads interdisciplinary research at the intersection of religion and Asian studies, collaborating with historians and cultural theorists. Current projects emphasize spatial analysis of religious institutions in imperial China.
